Why do Jews say they are indigenous to Israel when the Israelites came from Egypt?

The biblical account of the Israelites Exodus says they came from Egypt. So doesn’t this mean they are indigenous to Egypt? Also, according to the Old Testament, the Israelites traced their ancestry back to the patriarch Abraham, who is said to have originated from the city of Ur in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq). So then why not claim to be indigenous to Iraq?
