Why did my friends worry when I helped carry their book?

Hey guys, I had a confusing situation happen a few years ago and I just wanted some clarity so I can avoid accidental offense it in the future.

My jewish friends were moving and I (not jewish) was helping carry their belongings inside their new house. I picked up a fairly large book that was covered in some sort of cloth and set it inside. I was happy to help them and so I just sort of grabbed whatever looked like it needed to come in next!

All of the sudden they kept asking me if I touched it, I told them yes I just brought it in. They seemed super frazzled and concerned, then the husband quietly said to the wife that they’ll just have to get another one. I didn’t know and still don’t know why this reaction happened.

Can anyone explain what this might have been?
