“White Jews”

Someone at shul (ashkenazi, if that matters?) uses this term a lot.

Does describing a Jew as Black/white essentially use the reductive lens of White Anglo Saxon Protestants’ racial theories?

• If so, does it strengthen Jews’ unique identities, or weaken them?

If not, where do the prefixes “white,” “Black,” and etc. come from?

How appropriate are they in an age of increasing inclusion and awareness of Jews from non-ashkenazi/Sephardi/Mizrahi backgrounds?

What do you think of the term “white Jews”?
