What is modern about modern orthodoxy?

What does “modern” mean in modern orthodoxy? It doesn’t seem to refer to the technological abilities of the adherents, nor the time period of their existence. I.e. there are contemporary Orthodox groups not described as modern. So what does it mean?

Is it a pejorative? I hear people using the term to mean people who don’t follow Halacha but are nominally not Conservative. That didn’t sound right to me though so I wanted your opinions.
