What Does Judaism Teach in Regards to the Origin of Suffering and Evil?

I’ve read the Old Testament quite closely for more than a year now, and while Christians seem quite unified in their teachings on where evils stem from, I’m curious on the Jewish perspective. I’ve heard some say that evil is primarily simply a lack of goodness, but I’ve also heard others say that ultimately evil was in fact created by or at least started in some way by The Father. Note that I’m neither a standard Christian nor am I Jewish, just a theist who wishes to hear different perspectives!
