What does it mean for God to “hallow” us?

In the Hanukkah prayer it is said God “hallows” us with mitzvot. What exactly does this mean?

When I look up hallow in an English dictionary it means to consecrate, and if I look that up it means to make holy, and if I look holy up holy means to be dedicated to God.

Does this mean God makes us dedicated to Him through mitzvot? Am I on the right track here?
