What do you say when asked what religion you are by a stranger?

I spent a year studying abroad in a Muslim majority country in Central Asia, and I got asked about my religion a few times, mostly from taxi drivers. I’m not Jewish but I am atheist, which I didn’t feel comfortable sharing with a stranger there. They tend to assume all Americans are Christians, so I would just say that without going into any detail. What would you say in such a situation?

EDIT: Thanks for all the responses! Many of my ancestors were conversos/crypto-Jews, and I’m trying to learn more about the Jewish experience, both historical and modern.
