Was this sort of relationship common during this Biblical time period?

‘And it cometh to pass, when he finisheth to speak unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan hath been bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loveth him as his own soul. And Saul taketh him on that day, and hath not permitted him to turn back to the house of his father. And Jonathan maketh — also David — a covenant, because he loveth him as his own soul, ‘ 1 Samuel 18:1-3 https://my.bible.com/bible/821/1SA.18.1-3

What kind of covenant is this and are there other instances of this type of covenant elsewhere in the Bible?

Not long after that, I saw that Jonathan’s father Saul was upset with him over “choosing” David:

‘And the anger of Saul burneth against Jonathan, and he saith to him, ‘Son of a perverse rebellious woman! have I not known that thou art fixing on the son of Jesse to thy shame, and to the shame of the nakedness of thy mother? ‘ 1 Samuel 20:30 https://my.bible.com/bible/821/1SA.20.30

And then another covenant:

‘And the anger of Saul burneth against Jonathan, and he saith to him, ‘Son of a perverse rebellious woman! have I not known that thou art fixing on the son of Jesse to thy shame, and to the shame of the nakedness of thy mother? ‘ 1 Samuel 20:30 https://my.bible.com/bible/821/1SA.20.30

It piqued my interest enough that I read both books of Samuel and the relationship between these two was interesting. I’d read this also:

‘I am in distress for thee, my brother Jonathan, Very pleasant wast thou to me; Wonderful was thy love to me, Above the love of women! ‘ 2 Samuel 1:26 https://my.bible.com/bible/821/2SA.1.26

How often were these sorts of pairings happening in the Bible? What was the point and purpose of it? The amount of love they had for each other and their devotion to each other is odd.
