Was there ever a “golden age” of Judaic observance?

Seems like there is a sizeable number of those who are culturally Jewish or simply Jewish because their mother is. Was wondering if this dynamic was always roughly the same as today or was their a period where a greater number of people tended to try to deliberately live their lives in accordance with the Torah with all that this entails?
