Trying to study Talmud

I’m a conversion student about 6 months into the process, and I’m interested in studying Talmud on my own in addition to what I’ve learned from my Rabbi. It may sound like a weird question, but how exactly do you do it? Do you just get a copy of the Talmud and read? Are there commentaries that you study about the Talmud? I’m just not even sure where to start and google has really vague results, any tips? Also if anyone has recommendations for particular books or commentaries I would appreciate it, google has been super unhelpful in tracking anything down.
