According to this article in today’s Washington Post (free to read for next 14 days using this gift link), the creator of the iconic Baltimore seafood spice blend immigrated from Germany in the late 1930s.
The article doesn’t seem to get into whether he ate it on crabs himself, but of course, Old Bay is good on things other than shellfish.
