Thoughts on Rabbi Slifkin/Challenge of Creation?

Somewhat recently, I finished reading “the challenge of creation” by rabbi natan slifkin. In it, he basically argues how evolution is supported by the Torah and how the two work well together. Obviously, this was a controversial opinion to many, and sadly as a result he was put in Cherem. Personally, the whole issue of “is the world thousands or billions of years old” isn’t vital to my emunah – if it’s billions, then rabbi slifkin is right, and if not not. That’s basically it for me. However, I was wondering if anyone else has read it/something like it if they had any thoughts? Or just any thoughts on this question as a whole?
