The Yahrtzeit of Rachel Imenu

Today is the yahrtzeit of Rachel Imenu, wife of Yaakov Avinu.

I understand that assigning verse numbers to pesukim is not originally a Jewish practice, but I’ll do it anyway:

Bahya ben Asher ibn Halawa, one of two people we call Rabbeinu Bahya, cites two sources similar to Rashi on Bereishit 29:9.

Why did Yaakov Avinu cry when he kissed Rachel Imenu? According to Bereishit Rabbah 70:12, he was crying because of a prophetic vision that he would not be buried with her at the Cave of Machpelah.

According to the Sefer HaYashar, he cried because he thought of himself as her potential suitor, and realized that he was destitute, whereas Eliezer, his father’s servant, had brought gifts to Rivkah Imenu. According to this opinion, Eliphaz ben Esav had settled for leaving Yaakov Avinu penniless rather than killing him, because poverty is like death.

This is one of the main reasons that giving tzedakah is so important: it is as if you are reviving the dead.
