Tefillin (seeking advice/encouragement)

I’m a Jewish man in a long, slow process of becoming more religious, having been raised very minimally observant. When my wife and I moved into our home, we hung mezuzot and started keeping a kosher-style vegetarian kitchen (I know it’s not the same as halachically kosher but this is a big win for us). This Rosh Hashanah, we made a resolution to light candles every Shabbat, and so far we have done it.

Now I want to start a daily practice of putting on tefillin. To date I have done this exactly once in my life. I printed out the instructions from Chabad, but for some reason it still feels a bit intimidating. I am thinking of trying to start with just once a week at first.

For some reason this specific step feels extremely emotional to me. My family has been close to secular for 3+ generations. The last religious people in my family died in the Holocaust. I don’t know why this step feels so hard, but it does.

Has anyone else been through something similar? I would appreciate any advice and words of encouragement.

Thank you!
