Tefillah without a set of tefillin?

I’ve been a largely unaffiliated Jew for a while now but looking to become more observant. Although I have a set of tefillin from my Bar Mitzvah, they are not kosher according to what I have read online (the paint is peeled and boxes are not in good condition). My current financial situation prevents me from buying a new set.

My question is, can I still perform shacharit without using them? I do have a tallit gadol however.
