We just got our synagogue dues statement in the mail – after all, the holidays are just around the corner – and I’m a bit miffed. Curious to hear how other synagogues are handling this and how folks are feeling about it.
The reason I’m miffed: the rate is the same as this year with no more than an handwaved, one-sentence explanation of we-don’t-know-what-to-expect. And I get that, but when I’m throwing this much money at something I currently can’t take advantage of and won’t be able to for the foreseeable future, I would appreciate a little more transparency. Basically, I want to pay keep the lights on for when we can finally return, and I’m curious where all the unspent operating costs disappeared to this year. They also threw in the standard, “If you can’t pay the full amount, call the executive director to negotiate,” which seems like a particularly insensitive hurdle given the current levels of employment loss/uncertainty.
