Soviet/Russian Jews: why identify with a culture that oppressed you?

Why are the majority of Jews from the former USSR anti-religious even now that they are in the US or Israel? I understand that religion and religious education was made all but impossible in the USSR, but wouldn’t Russian Jews want to reclaim their heritage now that they are free to do so? Furthermore, wouldn’t they want to abandon all vestiges of the Soviet culture that erased their identity?

Your insight is appreciated.
