Shul/Synagogue Staring Contest

Last night and today, I (safely) went to a stricter Shul than the one I usually attend since my father goes there and in honor of my Bubbie’s Yahrzeit.

Unfortunately, I “did not fit in” and unnecessarily got stared at. Multiple people kept turning around and looking at me like kids do. Even had a little staring contest and made some of them embarrassingly look away. Here’s my takeaway:

  1. Don’t purposely make guests uncomfortable, no matter how differently they look. Glance once, don’t stare.

  2. Keep doing what you’re doing because it’s the right thing to do. You’re not doing anything wrong

  3. Whether someone is more or less religious than you, be courteous. You don’t have to be best friends but we’re all Jews/human beings.
