Shabbat Elevator and Car Passenger

Being in a Shabbat Elevator or riding as a passenger with someone else driving in a car – isn’t it the same thing? You didn’t press the button in the elevator but you can benefit from the electricity being exerted, just like in a car, you didn’t turn on the engine, all you do is sit there. Why is one permissible on Shabbat and the other is not?
