Seeing other religions before Bar Mitzvah?

This was many years ago, but before my Bar Mitzvah I was expected to learn about other religions and use it as a factor of my choice if I wanted to continue down the path of Judaism or do a different religion.

I was wondering if this was universal for most other jews / if this part of the process has a name.
