Resources for the word “echad”

Hi, I’m hoping someone can help me. There were some Christians attempting to debate me that when it comes to Deut. 6:4, there is no linguistic evidence of Echad being singular “oneness”. As in, they claim that the same word is used in Genesis to describe husband and wife being one. In other words that it can be interpreted as a compound unity.

I’m wondering if there is evidence in the language itself that this is not the case (that this usage of Echad is non compound) If there isn’t and it is based on interpretation, I was wondering if there is some rabbinical source on as to how that interpretation is justified?

Hope this makes sense, thank you!
