Reading in shul on Shabbat

I’m taking my surly, adhd, squirmy 15 year old to an orthodox shul for a bar mitzvah of an extended family member. I’ve never been to this shul and know little about it beyond the fact that there’s a mechitza and he’ll have to sit with his cousins, not me (his mom). He doesn’t read Hebrew, won’t be able to follow the service, and will rely on cues from his cousins to sit/stand etc.

I’ve thought about having him bring a book with him but am not sure of the protocol of it. First, we’ll be carrying it; we are coming from outside the eruv – but the relatives know we are arriving by taxi. And second, it’s a secular book.

Anyone have thoughts on this?
