QUESTION: patriarch’s seat at the table

my uncle who is a rabbi (we’re Sephardic) said that according to Jewish law, if the patriarch isn’t present, no one should take his place at the head of the table. for context, this came up when my grandfather was in the hospital — he said no one should take his seat in his absence.

i’ve tried to look this up online but can’t find anything… does this sound familiar to anyone or?
