Last week’s parshah, Tetzaveh, Exodous 29:46
“They will know that I, the Lord, am their God, Who brought them out of the land of Egypt in order that I may dwell in their midst; I the Lord am their God”
Question: Why would it be necessary for G-d to bring us out of Egypt ‘in order’ that G-d might dwell in our midst? Couldn’t G-d dwell in our midst wherever we were- really anywhere- even in the land of Egypt?
Was it a matter of Israel’s lack of acceptance of G-d at the time? Was the enslaved nation of Israel really so cold to G-d that they wouldn’t let G-d dwell amongst them? In other words they wouldn’t do their part to bring G-d and holiness to their immediate world?
If so (and I understand this is a lot of ‘ifs’) fast forward to now. How many of our brothers and sisters are caught in this same slave mentality today, neglecting G-d? And in following, do these brothers and sisters have any agency in the matter? G-d seemed to take action when we were slaves in Egypt. What about now? Is it within our brothers’ and sisters’ power, caught in slave mentality, to open themselves to welcoming G-d? Or must they wait for G-d to rescue them, like he did before?
