I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask…I have an orthodox Jewish classmate in my masters program (social work). She commutes quite far from her Orthodox neighborhood in a different state. I would not be surprised if she were the only Orthodox person on campus. I don’t know which subsect of Orthodoxy she comes from and I don’t want to risk alienating her by asking. She seems skittish socially, but quite likeable. I’d like to know, is it common for an Orthodox woman, married with multiple kids, to attend a secular university so far from home without any Orthodox community presence? Is this an anomaly, or is my understanding of Orthodox tendencies skewed? I tried googling about it but it’s such a specific question.
