Mincha- mincha gedolah and mincha ketana

I know that mincha is intended to be in the afternoon, and that you can pray it any time from mincha gedolah until sunset. That much, I understand. I have read that it’s preferable to do mincha after mincha ketana. Why? It would seem logical if the preferable time to daven mincha were called mincha gedolah, and the less preferable time were called mincha ketana. Why is it the other way round?
