Jewish use of the word “by”

I didn’t grow up frum but having been apart of an orthodox community now for 4 years I’ve noticed something funny about how the word “by” is used.

For example: “Come by me for Shabbos” meaning come to my house for Shabbos

Or if I’m setting a play date and ask if should go over their house or if they’ll come to my place, I’ll get a “come by me” as a response.

I’ve been wondering about this for a while and I’m not sure if it’s community dependent (a lot of New Yorkers – BK specifically). I haven’t really heard this use of “by” elsewhere and I think it’s funny/interesting.

Hopefully someone will know what I’m talking about. And full disclosure I’m not at all trying to judge, but just curious.
