Jewish Person, Jewish Questions #5

Hey I’m still learning a lot about Judaism and I have a lot of questions. I may have been born to a Jewish family but that doesn’t mean I already have all the answers. During my journey thus far, I’ve really discovered how much controversy and misinterpretation there is about Jewish customs and ideals. So I thought I’d start a series where I post to this community and see where it goes.

This one isn’t so much a question I need answered, more of trying to get different perspectives from other Jews on this topic. I’ve been doing a lot of research in this area so it’s probably smart to take a breather and see what other people think. I’ll probably repost in the morning but here we go.

Simply put what is God. More generally, what do we mean when we say YHWH and Elokim, separately, what other names do we know him as and what do they mean. I’m looking into the idea of him being the infinity, but if anyone’s heard of a different philosophy, I’d love to hear it.

I think it’s important for me to stress that there are no wrong answers when it comes to this. We all come from different backgrounds and different families and have different rabbis and are in different points of our growth, so naturally we’re going to have different ways of viewing this. Again I don’t want this to become a place of argument, but a place for us to learn about our different ways of understanding what it is we believe in.
