Is it weird to wear tzitzit when you’re not orthodox?

Conservative with Renewal roots. I understand wearing tzitzit & a kippah will lead people to assuming my denomination or level of observance, & expected as such when I started wearing them recently. My rabbi encouraged me to do what mitzvot I can, & I’ve found a lot of spiritual fulfillment for this one. But the last jew that talked to me about it, he wasn’t Orthodox, seemed weirded out that I wasn’t Hasidic or Chabad (his specific queries) but still wearing them. Now I’m just wondering if there’s a graceful way I can say I like fulfilling this mitzvah, or if it’s just gonna throw everybody off forever no matter how graceful I am.
