Is it okay to highlight and underline in a Torah?

I’m learning about different religions for a class. Judaism is the next one we’re studying. I bought a Torah to read, as well as the religious books of other religions,. It seems like a good idea to dive further into what we’re studying instead of focusing on just the basics. When I read, I like annotating with highlights, underlines, and tabs. It helps me stay focused on the parts I want to learn more about and go back to what I took a lot from. Would it be okay to do this with a physical Torah? Would a digital copy work better for this or does the format not matter? I am okay with typing my annotations separately if that’s viewed as the respectful thing to do as I do not want to do anything viewed as offensive to sacred text.
