Is it incorrect to say "atheist Jew"?

I just want to know if this makes sense cause we are trying to explain it to a foreign friend.

A friend of mine is Jewish and is very connected with his cultural roots. But he don’t share the same faith, even though he is happy to help his family in many religious events, even though he dont participate (he is not an atheism preacher lol just dont believe and don’t care about gods. his family is pretty open minded too). So he identifies as an atheist Jew, which makes sense in our homeland. I want to know if this concept makes any sense or it’s incorrect to say it, because I don’t want to offend anyone.
