I’m trying to understand how commentary works

It strikes me that Torah commentary is largely made up deleted scenes that act as a way of explaining a largely convoluted and inexplicable story. What I mean is, how could the sages possibly know that, say, Miriam served as a wet nurse for her brother?

I can’t seem to wrap my head around how to approach these details that strike me as fabricated untruths. This is not to say the Torah is equally riddled with falsehoods, more so that I fail to comprehend why we’re meant to take commentary at face value.
