I worked as a madrich (counselor) in two American high school gap year yeshivas in Israel AMA

In my early twenties I became very religious and worked in two American yeshivas in Jerusalem as a counselor. I am no longer religious.

The Rabbis running these yeshivas are very unbalanced. They are not qualified educators, and the things I heard them tell these kids were very misguided, incorrect and sometimes dangerous. It is very similar to cult indoctrination with love bombing and radical speeches.

There were also inappropriate discussions about sex and masturbation that were completely misinformed. I remember having a student approach me crying and hysterical because he masturbated and I had to calm him down and tell him everything is okay. I really do not think these places are healthy for teenagers when their mind is so susceptible to influences. I understand that they want to be with their friends, but looking back I am pretty confident it does a lot more harm than good.

If you are considering sending your child to Israel for a year after high school I urge you to reconsider.

I would be happy to answer any questions in the comments.
