I read that the late Satmar Rebbe was smuggled out of Nazi-occupied Hungary by Zionist groups, but later refused to publicly thank them because of his anti-Zionist position. Is this true?

Some allegations I encountered also said that he initially refused to leave Hungary and instructed his hassidim to do the same, resulting in some of them perishing. If true, how do Satmar hassidim reconcile this with the almost fatherly role he was supposed to have as a Rebbe?

I’m treading carefully here in light of the old saying:

And [he also said:] warm yourself before the fire of the wise, but beware of being singed by their glowing coals, for their bite is the bite of a fox, and their sting is the sting of a scorpion, and their hiss is the hiss of a serpent, and all their words are like coals of fire.
