I have a question about finding which sect suits me best

I was raised secular and I am trying to be more religious. I forget where I heard it but I heard somewhere that reading the Torah and interpreting it for myself and finding a sect that is most similar to my interpretation is the best way. My question is was the advice I was given good?

I am asking because if it was bad, I don’t want to do a bunch of work and have it all be meaningless but if it is good advice, I will fully commit myself to doing it..
