I am not Jewish, but have Jewish Heritage. Can I wear the star of David?

My grandfather was Jewish and currently both of my parents live in Israel. I understand that I am not Jewish according to the traditional law since my mother is not Jewish, but I take pride in having some Jewish heritage. I am thinking of getting a necklace to wear. What would Jews I meet make of it? or perhaps think to themselves?
