How long was a year (שנה) in Bereshit?

Bereshit 5:4–5:32 gives a long genealogy with the lifespans listed of numerous individuals, most of which are far longer than the known lifespans of man.

ex.:

All the days of Jared came to 962 years; then he died.

(Bereshit 5:20)

These events appear to be written in a different calendar and time system, and that the שנה of Bereshit does not correspond to a single revolution of the Earth around the Sun. The only other interpretation is a literalist one in which the first generations of man after the expulsion from Gan Eden were blessed with longer lives than later generations.
