How do Jews and Samaritans perceive each other nowadays?

Hello! Growing up in India and going to a Christian school, I thought that Samaritans were an ancient people who no longer existed.

Well! It turns out that not only do they exist today, they were pretty numerous in classical and late antique times. But I understand that they were not part of either Rabbinical or Second Temple Judaism (please correct me if I’m wrong). So seemingly there was a long time when Samaritans and Jews lived near each other in large numbers but did not think of each other as co-religionists?

I wonder, do you guys see each other as long lost cousins? And what are your thoughts on the idea that Samaritans are the descendants of the ten northern tribes who didn’t get deported?
