How did the pillar Jacob built become incorporated into the Temple?

It is written, Bereshit 35:14, that Jacob set up a pillar. This was at the place where the Temple would eventually be built. My question is, how did a pillar become a Temple, in terms of construction? Are there any accurate medieval paintings of what the pillar looked like? Why I am confused about it is the Egyptians and idol worshippers loved to put up pillars and obelisks, so presumably, there was something distinct in the build of the pillar Jacob made to differentiate it?

My questions are 1) how was the design different in Jacob’s pillar to Hashem compared to idol worshippers pillars to idols, and 2) how did the pillar turn into the Temple?
