I’m a former Christian who was raised in the Christian tradition but who gradually became an atheist over time. I have noticed that, of all the atheists I’ve met, most came from Christian or Muslim backgrounds. But I have never met an atheist who came from an Orthodox Jewish background.
I have the impression that Orthodox Jews tend to be resistant to such “conversions” to irreligion because of the close-knit and closed-off nature of their communities. Would you say this is true? Is anyone here a former Orthodox Jew turned atheist/agnostic? Can you tell me what that process was like — what led you to leave your traditions and beliefs behind?
