History of "masorti" identity

In Israel, when did the “masorti” identity start to take hold?

Obviously, there have been partially observant Jews who maintain traditions for as long as there’s been Judaism. But when did current “masorti” solidify into an identity–one of the 4 major ways that Israeli Jews identify (along with dati, hiloni, and haredi)? And when did people start using that term to define the identity?
