Historical question: Judaism in Alexandria around the time of Philo of Alexandria (20bce-30ce). What do we know about its origin, especially its incorporation of Greek Philosophy into learning about scripture?

Hey everyone!

I am wondering about this topic.

I’ve heard from several sources that the Jewish community around Philo (20bce-30ce) was larger than that at Jerusalem. Is this true what records do we have for estimating such population size?

What also do we know about why Jews would want to live away from the Temple in another land?

Along what lines did the authorities in Alexandria operate? Did they have an oral torah and transmission? I find it interesting that Philo so freely relates to Greek learning for the exposition of the meaning of scripture. How did this become an acceptable intellectual tradition?

Thanks guys! <3
