Hanukkah Help!

My in-laws are in town and are mostly not religious but have a Christian upbringing/background, and they are conservative.

Obviously I’ve been lighting our menorah every night and they’ve been asking questions like “why don’t you just leave the candles in instead of using new ones every night?” or calling the menorah “the holder thing”.

Is it normal for humans who aren’t Jewish, who absolutely have the resources to learn even minor details about Hanukkah, to be this ignorant?

I can’t tell if my frustrations are justified, and non-Jews genuinely just don’t know and that’s normal, or if I’m just projecting due to holiday in-law irritation. I feel like I know the basics of The Bible and general practices of other religions, because knowing about other cultural and religious practices is the right thing to do as a fellow human.
