This is the first of likely two or three relevant megathreads over the next two weeks before Chanukah is upon us.
This is NOT in any way meant to limit the number of Hanuka-related posts standing alone on the sub, but rather provide a central location for questions, comments, and advice as we approach what will be for many Jews around the world, a unique experience. Even in countries that have COVID-19 under control, or ones who thought they did, Jews all over the globe are navigating this holiday a bit differently than usual, with no (or, more realistically, fewer and smaller) parties and possibly a less warm celebration in this coldest of seasons.
However, that doesn’t mean that you’ll be alone this year for this most candle-lit time of our year. Ask questions and share ideas here to help your fellow Jews the world over spin sivivon and gorge themselves on oily shredded potatoes and fruit-filled sugarbread with as much mindful community as possible.
Hanukkah starts on the evening of Thursday, 10 December and runs through Friday, 18 December. For those of us using a different calendar, it’s from 25 Kislev to 3 Tevet.
Hag haUrim (Festival of Lights) celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the Maccabean Rebellion (not these Maccabees) against the Seleucid Empire (when it doubt, blame the Hellenists.)
