From the Think Hashem emails

In this week’s Parsha (well, technically this past week’s; this email is from Friday I think), we are taught about the Mitzvah of Bal Tashchis – not to destroy or waste the goodness found in Hashem’s world

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch explains that this Mitzvah is Hashem’s warning to us not to misuse the position as masters of the world and its matter through thoughtless and wasteful destruction of anything on earth.

According to a 2011 (by now it’s probably more) study commissioned by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, roughly one-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year – approximately 1.3 billion tons – gets wasted.
