Expectation to read scripture by commoners?

Preface: I’m a Christian, so I apologize for anything ignorant I might say.

For the time period where literacy was uncommon; lets say 3000BC to 1500AD:
Were the commoners who were literate expected to read scripture or was it preferred to receive all scriptural teachings from a Rabbi?

Also, was Jewish scripture considered to be easy to understand or did it require specific education to comprehend?

Thanks in advance
