Does challah HAVE to be pareve?

Hey (Jew) pals,

I have a question for you guys. I know that regular bread has to be pareve, but bread in general does not, as long as it has some sort of distinct shape. So my question is: does challah have to be pareve, or can it be made with milk/butter? I know it traditionally is pareve, but the question is whether it has to be.

Thank you, internet!
