Does anyone know the origin of the phrase Am Yisrael Chai?

As one of the most popular phrases in modern Jewish lexicon I was wondering if anyone knew when it was first popularized? The first use I was able to find was British Army Chaplain Rabbi Leslie Hardman shouting out Am Yisrael Chai at the end of the Hatikvah recording from the liberation of Bergen-Belsen bur this can’t have been the first use right?
