Do you believe Zionism is compatible with Judaism?

This has been a major debate in Judaism effectively since the concept of Zionism was put forth.

Many Jews believed that it is for God only to re-establish the Kingdom of Israel and not us (wait for the coming of the Messiah). Many Jews also believed that God would never permit the re-establishment of Israel – many believed that being sent into the diaspora and the destruction of the Kingdom of Israel was God’s punishment for turning away from him to false gods (certainly the view of the prophets like Isaiah). Thus to re-establish Israel would be contrary to Gods will.

However, gradually over time, Jewish scholars began to view Zionism as being compatible to Judaism for reasons I am ignorant of.
