Did Sabbath exist before creation?

I am coming from a protestant Christian background and am currently enjoying the book, The Sabbath by Abraham Heschel.

In the book he writes, “The Sabbath preceded creation and the Sabbath completed creation; it is all of the spirit that the world can bear. “

I guess a couple questions…

  1. What does he mean by it preceded creation?

  2. Is it common for Jewish people to see the Sabbath in this way?

  3. What does the last bit mean from the quote? “it is all of the spirit that the world can bear. “

Ok, that’s it for now. I’m just starting the book but really enjoying it. It is compact and elegant.

Thanks for your help!
